another picture from my weekend jaunt to pittsburgh pa... yesterday and todays pictures are from the amazing national aviary on the north side of pittsburgh... if you ever get a chance you must go ... this was one of my favorite areas where we were able to go into the room with dozens of lorikeets the birds were incredibly friendly and would even perch on your arm... beautiful birds!

took this in the WONDERFUL "reading terminal market" ... this market which opened in the mid to late 1800's still houses well over 80 vendors from all over pennsylvania and the northeast whom sell food and produce of ALL varieties... it is a great place to get lost and spend minutes or hours... and of course i love taking photography and this market has an inexhaustible wealth of opportunities!

today i want to say thank you to all the veterans who dedicate their lives to our country... they make a lot of sacrifice and they deserve respect for that... i feel though that we need to also recognize that there is a VERY large group of recent and past veterans who have been speaking about against the war we are in... they also have served and also support and love their country but are often treated as heretics... so today remember the troops that are still serving as well as those that are speaking about what they saw and what they feel is an unjust war... for more information about Iraq Vets Against the War go to IVAW.org

a venture out to a wonderful corn maze in nowheresville pennsylvania about an hour outside philadelphia... it was wonderful to get out of town and enjoy the weather... plus running through a corn maze is very cathartic!!

this is a breathtaking cathedral which is minutes from philadelphia in bryn athyn... the "bryn athyn cathedral" is the high seat of the General Church of the New Jerusalem which is an international church based out of bryn athyn... originally from the Swedenborgian belief system they "New Church" set its self apart and founded itself here... if you are ever in the area you should definitely go and see the cathedral and the grounds they are a great place to walk and take time to relax...

this beautiful church in the germantown area of philadelphia and is a throwback to a day passed... today the area is rife with color and diversity and i feel is an area far to rarely visited by the residents of greater philadelphia... the area has been home to many famous people from louisa may alcott, to bill tilden, to bill cosby ... i really liked the church though because of its arhitecture and it was a perfect subject to work on affecting the way an image feels in its use of dimensions and visual perspective...

today i had the privelage of seeing obama speak in the germantown area of philadelphia... it was amazing, i got there at 8 am for an 11 am speech and the line was over 8 blocks long in two directions... i just hope that this type of energy is still here in a few weeks... although every person who runs for office is a "politician" and probably not aligned fully with what i would like obama is a very charasmatic leader and will instantly improve our standing here and globally... it is definitely time to make some changes

following my theme from yesterday i am going to continue to contrast small vs large beauty... here again the wall that i came upon, like many buildings in philadelphia, was historic and beautiful with its fully covered ivy surface... but a closer look at the ivy shows a new view of this beauty... a third aspect for me deals with the contrast to the "open road" the view of the picture gives the feeling of an everlasting road... one which someone might begin a journey upon... but you have to know that although there is much beauty up the road there is also beauty right where you are... the key is to keep the eyes open no matter what stage of the road we are on!

Almost passed this amazing site the other day on my bike... but when i stopped got off and really looked the incredible detail of such a creation blew me away.... directly behind it is a church which has amazing beauty and is a creation which as humans we hold up as superb but which pales in comparison to such beauty as the spiderweb... but yet it astounds me to think of how much is out there that we don't see because we are just too busy and don't stop to see...

this is a picture i took at a "eyes wide open across pennsylvania" event in phoenixville, pa (just outside philadelphia) ... in 2006-2007 i worked for the AFSC based out of pittsburgh, pa... as a peace advocacy organization we worked in many areas promoting peace and understanding... one of the areas which i headed up was the "eyes wide open"... this profound exhibit travels across pennsylvania displaying a pair of military boots representing each pennsylvania soldier to be killed in the war in iraq... at this time pa has lost 189 young men and women... the exhibit demonstrates in a very tangible way the cost of war ... many states are now presenting the exhibit and if anyone ever has a chance to go it is a powerful and important experience

have been having some trouble with the internet lately at my house which accounts for my poor performance in updating the last few days... i hope to get this issue taken care of ASAP ... wanted to post a picture which i felt very much typified for me true love... although dogs can't speak (english at least ) their mannerisms speak of their complete unquestioning devotion and love... sometimes when i see all the problems we get into as humans i feel that we could take a page from our friends and try to think a little less with our brains and maybe more with our hearts and remember that we are all here together and we are all humanity

i am a really big fan of taking pictures of everyday items which are shown in a new light and in an artistic way... this was a beer i was having a short while ago and the lamp behind it struck me as a piece of art ... i thought the way the light shone through really gave me a feel of life... as a plug i was having this beer at a bar "fiume" which is in west philadelphia and has a great array of excellent beers... also it is directly above an AMAZING ethiopian restaurant Abyssinia ... and you can even order ethiopian up to the bar!! so check it out if you are in philadelphia!

the building is another apartment complex where a friend of my lives... this is highlighting a very nice area of the city which is the art museum section of philadelphia... directly across the street is the philadelphia art museum which has become famous for its large fine art galleries, its proximity to the schuylkill river, and of course its connection to the rocky films... if you have ever seen the movies you will know the part i speak of when rocky triumphantly ascends the beautiful steps and throws his hands in the air... this area also has a number of nice cafes and restaurants which make it a great place to live...

i saw this logo today at the plymouth meeting mall today (a large suburban mall about 20 mins from philadelphia)... this emblem is representing one of the original department store locations for the strawbridge and clothier corporation... the eastern united states store is now part of macys ... strawbridge and clothier was started by two quakers living in philadelphia.... the philadelphia area is the US home of the peace church... although william penn and the other quaker colonizers are known for their extreme piety and uprightness i still find the emblem ironic given what is known to have transpired between the colonizing peoples and the native americans... would not be a seal of confidence i would put my trust in...

So today's post is actually of Pittsburgh, PA. I really enjoy Pittsburgh as a city, and especially love the amazing city views you can get. This one was from the top of the Duquesne Incline! But the real reason I put this up was to tout an organization one of my good friends works for. It is called Global Links. And they are an organization that helps package and send medical equipment and supplies overseas. It turns out that they are much in need right now as they are trying to help out Cuba after Hurricane Ike just devestated the island. They are one of the few organizations in the USA allowed to send aid. after my post about the wolves i thought it was only fitting to show a little more "wild dog" (or not so wild dog) pictures... the other day i took the picture of the puppy up top... i was walking down the street and he was tied to a chair by a little shop... he looked SO happy and his love for life made me radiate... this then made me think of my own dog holly, who is the beautiful pomeranian that you see... i have been much blessed to know her for 11 years and as animals do for many people she has been like a family member... she is also incredibly photogenic which is awesome... well that was my transition from the joy of the wild to the incredible joy and beauty of domestic animals!

this is from a jaunt i took just outside of philadelphia a few days ago... there is a wolf preserve not far which is incredible to see... but on the other hand i was a little bit sad... the man who has rescued them from various situations is so nice and cares more for the wolves then anything i have seen before, but it breaks my heart to see them in (even large) fenced in areas... we always think about what was done to other people by humans being so colonial, but a major question we really need to ask ourselves ... is it worth our advancement at the expense of such amazingly graceful animals... sorry for the negative thoughts, but was just on my mind... i hope you enjoy this picture half as much as i enjoyed being at this wolf preserve
